I think Mathilde is very greedy and in my opinion she puts it upon herself. She isn’t rich but she isn’t poor, she is right in the middle but she’s not happy with what she has and she should be. She might want to live the “American Dream“ because she is surrounded by people who are living it. For most of the story she is greedy, until she loses the diamond necklace and has to replace it with a new one. She spent 10 years paying off the debt she was in from buying a new diamond necklace because she didn’t cheat, scam or steal. She bought the necklace fair and square and she paid it off all by herself as well. When she saw Madame Forester at the park and found out that the necklace that she had lost was fake diamonds I think Mathlide would have been heartbroken but still walk away with her head held high to show no sign of sadness. After that I don’t think she would have very good sleeps from that day on. I do understand why Mathilde did what she did but in the end, Madame Forester benefitted from all of Mathilde’s hard work.
